The song and record of the year categories are dominated by women, with Jon Batiste as the only male contender

The Grammy awards 2024 will celebrate the achievements of female artists, with SZA, Phoebe Bridgers, Victoria Monét and Taylor Swift leading the pack.

SZA has earned the most nominations with nine in total for her album SOS and its tracks, spanning pop, rap and R&B genres. The singer has only won one Grammy out of her 14 previous nominations. She faces Billie Eilish, boygenius, Jon Batiste, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift and Victoria Monét in the record of the year category.

Victoria Monét, Phoebe Bridgers and the mixing engineer Serban Ghenea are close behind with seven nominations each. Monét is also in the running for best new artist, along with others such as Ice Spice and Jelly Roll.

Women rule both the song and record of the year categories, with Batiste as the sole male nominee in both. Batiste won five major Grammy awards in 2022.

Swift, with six nominations, could make Grammys history if she wins album of the year, which would make her the first artist ever to win that category four times. Rodrigo, who has already won three Grammy awards, has got six nominations for her album GUTS and the song Vampire.

The Barbie album has also impressed with 12 nominations and songs from Eilish, Nicki Minaj and Dua Lipa featuring heavily. Songs from the soundtrack account for four out of the five nominees for best song from visual media.

Nominees outside the music world include Meryl Streep, Michelle Obama, Bernie Sanders and Dave Chappelle, for audiobook, storytelling or comedy awards.

This year introduces three new categories: best African music performance, best alternative jazz album and best pop dance recording. Kylie Minogue and Troye Sivan are among the nominees for the last category.

Notable omissions include country singer Morgan Wallen, who got only one nomination for Last Night for best country song. The song has stayed at No 1 in the US for 16 weeks this year.

Earlier this year, Beyoncé became the most awarded artist in Grammys history, winning four awards at the 65th ceremony and bringing her total to 32. Harry Styles took home album of the year for Harry’s House.

The 66th Grammy awards will happen on 4 February with a host to be announced.
